Outside Report: Training run turns into win in half marathon for Jeff Gardina

County downhillers dominated the Clydesdale class in the third CCCX race of the season at Toro Park on Sunday. Doug Dreager of Santa Cruz [4:00.87] won the division, followed by Will Black of Aptos [4:13.03] and Karl Kraft of Santa Cruz [4:16.92]. Josh Maurer of Scotts Valley came out ahead in a packed Sport 19-34 class in [3:48.73], while Deborah Vitale of Santa Cruz won the Sport women's race [5:16.50]. Seconds went to Kevin Saylor of Ben Lomond [Junior 13-under, 4:23.79], Tanner Tedsen of Soquel [Junior boys 16-18, 3:59.23], Brad Williamson of Aptos [single speed, 4:20.54], Tony Gasparich of Aptos [Beginner men 45-54, 4:52.72] and Brad Williamson of Aptos [Sport men 45-54, 4:10.04].

Santa Cruz County riders cleaned up in the Pro and Expert divisions at the CCCX cross country race held at Toro Park on April 6, winning six of eight such races. Jason Rahlwes of Capitola won the Pro/Semi-pro race [five laps, 1:40:29], while Josie Jacques-Maynes of Capitola went unchallenged for the women's Pro win [four laps, 1:43:45] and Mark Howland of Santa Cruz added a win in the Pro single speed race [five laps, 1:47:20]. Local winners in the five-lap Expert races included Miles Wadsworth of Soquel [35-44, 1:44:45], Geoff Drake of Aptos [45-54, 1:49:50] and Larry Broberg of Felton [55+, 2:10:00].
