Oliver Nickell and Kaylie Grey defended their home turf Sunday, winning the Junior men's and women's 18-under race, respectively, in the first Peak Season Cyclocross race ever held at Harbor High.

Nickell, a member of the Pirates' mountain biking team, evaded Bicycle Trip-sponsored Carl Dawson of Santa Cruz by 35 seconds on the muddy course. Josh Kaneg, another Harbor rider, took third. Grey, also a Pirates rider, edged Nikki Hiltz of Aptos.

Andy Jacques-Maynes of Capitola, fresh off winning a national cyclocross championship, won the Category A men's race over Justin Robinson of Bonny Doon. His wife Josie Jacques-Maynes, meanwhile, won the Category A women's race over Stell Carey of Felton.

Other local winners Janel Lodge of Santa Cruz in the Master Women 35+ class, Mark Howland of Santa Cruz in Master Men's 35+ A, Tim Sawyer of Santa Cruz in Master Men's 45+ B and Ron Riley of Aptos and Darik Thunstrom of Boulder Creek, who went uncontested to win the Junior Men 13-under and Master Men 65+ divisions, respectively.
